IV Nutrient Therapy

IV Therapy Social.jpg

IV Vitamin Therapy is an intravenous infusion of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids at high doses. These higher therapeutic doses are not obtainable through supplements or diet alone. Used in a variety of conditions, this valuable tool by-passes the gastrointestinal tract and into your bloodstream where it is more readily available for use.

Frequently asked questions

Why get IV vitamin therapy?

Absorption: When we take oral supplements we dont absorb 100% of what we ingest through our gastrointestinal tract. When we ingest food we can be absorbing anywhere from 10-90% of the nutrients in that food. Compound that with certain conditions and inflammation that further hinder that process, and it can be challenging for your body to obtain the nutrients it utilizes to heal and bring you into a state of optimal health.

By passing the GI tract we are able to utilize high doses that would not normally cause side effects and not be tolerated by the gut, making administration by IV an exceptionally powerful tool in modern medicine.

What conditions can it be used for?

Indications for IV therapy can include both acute and chronic illnesses.  High doses of vitamin C and other nutrients can be used in conjunction with other therapies to treat a variety of conditions. IV treatments can be used to decrease the intensity and duration of the illness.

Who can receive IV therapy? Is it safe?

Generally, IV is indicated for patients who are 16 years of age and older. Furthermore, before any IV treatment, the Naturopathic doctor will go over your health history (which will include past health issues, hospitalizations, surgeries, diet/digestion, allergies/ reactions, medications currently being used etc. with additional detailed questions) before deciding whether IV therapy is the most suitable route for you to consider at the time in question.

Generally, IV therapy from a Naturopathic context is a safe treatment. Most side effects are limited to possible bruising at site of needle insertion (although not common) and in rare cases may feel light-headed/ dizziness. Patients will be encouraged to hydrate well and have eaten before coming in for IV treatments.

How long does it take?

It depends on what type of IV you receive, but a treatment can be as short as 20 minutes, or as long as an hour or more.

Do you have to be a patient to get an IV?

Yes. To become eligible for IV therapy, you must be a patient of the clinic and have an active file. If you are an existing  or new patient Dr. Kim Niddery, will require about 15-30 min prior to your first IV to go through your health history, ask a few pertinent questions, and inform you of the procedure.

How often do I need to get IV treatments?

This is case specific. In general, if a Nutritional IV Treatment  is recommended, the Naturopathic doctor may decide to do 1-2 infusions per week for 6 weeks as an initial assessment, or even just 1-2 treatments per month. After this window of treatment, a decision will be made as to how frequent the sessions will continue thereafter and for what duration.
